I'm working with a new laptop which had vista 64 installed and I've run into some problems that I thought would be a good idea to share with you here.  

First of all the 64 bit operating system doesn't work for some audio programs and it is necisary to downgrade to a 32 bit operating system.  That is a pain in the... well it's a bitch.  After I did that I realized that I still had latency issues and it also seemed like Kontact just didn't work properly on my computer. 

last night a friend of mine found a solution for me.  The solution was an asio driver for my computer.  You don't need to buy an asio sound card to improve your computer's ability to run recording software.

check out this site and download the latest version.  This should fix a lot of the latency issues I've found using cubase, reason, and Kontact.

I think this latency problem was the final straw for me as a windows user. This is not a problem with Mac OS or Linux as there are no layers of software between your application and the souncard.

ASIO bypasses the normal audio path from the user application through
layers of intermediary Windows operating system software, so that the
application connects directly to the soundcard
hardware. Each layer that is bypassed means a reduction in latency, the
delay between an application sending sound to the sound being
reproduced by the soundcard. In this way ASIO offers a relatively
simple way of accessing multiple audio inputs and outputs
independently. Its main strength lies in its method of bypassing the
inherently high latency of Windows audio mixing kernels (KMixer), allowing direct, high speed communication with audio hardware.

asio4all is a great fix for an unnecessary problem. Though there are some annoying limitations. Generally, MP3 playback (iTunes and Media Player) don't work with this driver. This means you can't play Reason instruments along with a recording and you have to close any program that might be using your sound card before you open anything that uses the ASIO driver.
